Drag Performances and Defamation Lawsuit in Monroe, N.C.
In the bustling heart of Monroe, N.C., East Frank Superette and Kitchen has found itself at the center of a legal storm. Known for its vibrant drag performances, the establishment is countersuing a group of residents for defamation.
East Frank’s Legal Battle
East Frank Superette claims the local group of Monroe residents slandered them for hosting drag performances. This comes as a countermove after the group filed a lawsuit against the restaurant, accusing it of false advertising by allegedly altering photos to promote the shows.
The Accusations and Countersuit
For over a year, the downtown area has been a battleground. Carley Englander, co-owner of East Frank, asserts that not only has their business been impacted, but they’ve also been placed in a dangerous situation.
Englander explained, “Sue them right back. They’ve not only impacted our business but put us in a dangerous situation. We are countersuing for not just defamation but what defamation brings.”
The Protests and Community Reaction
Many plaintiffs have been vocal about their opposition to the drag shows. They argue that such performances are inappropriate for children. Protestors have even stood outside the restaurant, with some alleging “pedophilia happening here.”
Michelle Ball, part of the original lawsuit and named in the countersuit, emphasized her concern for protecting children.
Attorney’s Statements
Jason Sneed, representing the community members, claimed that East Frank took photos posted by the protestors and edited them to falsely depict the group as supporters.

Looking Ahead
As this legal chess game continues, the downtown Monroe community remains divided. The focus, however, should be on creating a safe environment for all, while allowing businesses to thrive and individuals to express themselves freely.
